Hi, I’m MaNishtana.
I’m the creator and editor-at-large here at JN Magazine, and I’d like to invite you all to come in. Have a seat. There’s some beer in the fridge. And if you’re not a barbarian, there’s some Glenlivet 21 on the shelf over there.
For anyone who doesn’t know, I’m the guy over at MaNishtana.net, a website that I’ve maintained for over five years now. I’ve watched it grow from a WordPress blog into a niche social media site to a WordPress based media site and back down to a personal blog once more.
I’m also what people like to call a Jew of Color (or JOC), born and raised on this crazy ride we call Judaism.
When I started back in 2009 there more than a few JOC blogs out there. This Is Babylon. Mixed Jewish Girl. Memoirs of a Jewminicana. Mocha Juden.
After a while, there was pretty much just me. And maybe that was fine enough for a while. But I really don’t think that’s the case anymore.
Because my entire point is that there isn’t any one definitive Jewish experience or perspective. And there’s as much diversity of opinion amongst the JOC community as there is in “mainstream Judaism”. Whatever that term means. (In case you can’t tell, I hate that phrase. As if somehow our memberships into literally the same denominations, beliefs, and practices as the rest of Judaism is somehow less “actual” Judaism just because some of us tan better than others. And have better food.)
We have opinions and thoughts that, shockingly enough, actually exist outside the context of being the designated flavor of a particular month or in response to something insensitive that “mainstream Judaism” said.
Unfortunately, Big Judaism has an object permanence problem. And JOCs have a visiblity problem.
But we’re here. We’ve always been here and we always will. And we write the Englishes good.
What better way to kick off the new year than looking at the world around you with a set of–not new–but different eyes, right?
So hop onboard.
This won’t be any less crazy of ride than a collection of “regular” Jewish views.
It’ll just be running a little bit later 😉
